MIKE SMITHSON has been a journalist for more than 20 years.
He started in the print media with Messenger Newspapers in the mid 70s. He then moved to television with Channel 7 Adelaide, later becoming the senior police reporter with Channel 7 Melbourne. He returned to Adelaide and became Channel 10’s first weekend newsreader before becoming a bureau chief with the Hinch and Real Life programs.
Mike then spent two years in London as the Seven Network’s European Correspondent, covering many of the world’s hotspots. He has also worked extensively on Today Tonight, London Radio, 2UE, 3AW, 4BC, 5DN AND 5AN, as well as Sky Satellite News.
Mike Smithson is currently a political reporter and news presenter, but over the past 20 year he has travelled the world covering everything from Royalty to the Skase chase. As the world prepared for the War Against Terrorism, Mike was dispatched by the Seven Network to the Pakistan/ Afghanistan border to watch and wait. He witnessed first hand the plight of refugees and saw the very first fighter aircraft fly into enemy territory to start the bombing campaign. But Mike also has an entertaining account of the wheeling and dealing behind the scenes as the world's media gathered information and compiled their stories in difficult and dangerous circumstances. But it's not all serious, with some very amusing anecdotes of events that were never allowed to go to air. |
